ESG Doesn't Fail for Lack of Data. It Fails for Lack of Conviction.

By Angelika Hernández Dorendorf · Creator of the WIN Method™ · 5 min read

We have never had more ESG data. More ratings, more frameworks, more reports. And yet so much of it still feels like theatre.

I know this from the inside. I founded an ESG committee in a family office. We had the frameworks, the meetings, the good intentions. What I learned surprised me: when the why does not come from within, ESG slowly turns into reporting. Then into language. Then, sometimes, into greenwashing.

Regulation can demand transparency. It cannot create conviction.

Conviction is learned

Conviction is not a checkbox. It is built through education, long before anyone manages a portfolio. If we want the people managing capital in ten or twenty years to invest from the heart and not only from the spreadsheet, we have to shape that generation today.

The starting point is sobering, amiga. Global surveys find that only about one in three adults is financially literate, and women score lower than men in nearly every country measured. In Switzerland, women receive roughly a third less pension than men. And according to UBS research, more than half of married women still leave long-term financial decisions to their partner.

At the same time, a historic transfer of wealth is under way, and a growing share of it is moving into women's hands. The capital that will shape the next decades of sustainable finance is landing with women, many of whom were never taught to direct it.

That is not a problem. It is the greatest leverage point we have.

The Silence Tax

When we do not speak about money, we pay for it. I call this the Silence Tax: the quiet cost of decisions delegated, questions never asked, values never invested. It rarely shows up on a statement. It shows up years later, often in an emergency, when it matters most.

Head, Heart and Voice

This is why the WIN Method™ works on three pillars at once. Head: the knowledge to understand money, risk and growth. Heart: the clarity to know what your money is for, so your wealth reflects your values. Voice: the courage to ask the questions, take your seat at the table and decide.

Most of us feel fine with one or two pillars. Then a crisis comes and reveals the missing one. ESG follows the same pattern: plenty of Head, with its data, metrics and models, and too little Heart and Voice.

Women are building the bridge

Until education systems adapt, women are closing the gap themselves. First in ourselves, then in our children. A mother who understands her money raises a child who understands theirs. A woman who invests with conviction asks better questions of every advisor, every fund and every board she sits on.

That ripple is how impact becomes real, one household and one generation at a time. Money is energy, and it flows where our intention goes. That is why education, the work we champion through NextGen4Impact and UN SDG 4.7, is the invisible infrastructure of ESG.

Your first brave step

You do not need to become a portfolio manager, querida. You need to begin. Ask one question this week that you have been postponing. Name what you want your money to stand for. Say it out loud.

That is where conviction starts. And conviction is where real impact starts.
