Women ask me this question more than any other: "Do I need a financial advisor, a private banker or a coach?" It is a good question, and the honest answer is that each of them does a different job — and that most women are sent to the wrong one first.
I spent more than twenty years in Swiss private banking, at UBS, at Credit Suisse and at a family-owned wealth manager in Zürich. I have sat on the banker's side of the table. Here is how the three roles really differ, from the inside.
The private banker: access, products and execution
A private banker manages the relationship between you and a bank. Her or his job is to understand your assets, open the right doors inside the institution — portfolio management, lending, custody, structuring — and make sure things are executed well. In Switzerland, private banking usually starts at significant asset levels, and the banker's performance is measured by the assets and revenue the relationship brings to the bank.
That is not a criticism. It is simply what the role is built for. A good private banker is invaluable when you already know what you want and need an institution to deliver it.
The financial advisor: a plan for your money
A financial advisor — independent or bank-employed — helps you build a plan: pensions, investments, insurance, tax-efficient saving, retirement timing. In Switzerland, people who advise clients on financial instruments are regulated under the Financial Services Act (FIDLEG/FinSA) and, when independent, must be registered. Always ask how the advisor is paid: a fee, a commission on products, or both. The answer tells you a great deal about the advice.
A good advisor answers the question "what should I do with my money?". What an advisor is not paid to answer is the question that decides whether you will actually do it.
The wealth coach: the woman behind the money
A wealth coach works on the person, not the portfolio. A coach does not sell products and does not manage assets. The work is on decisions, beliefs and behaviour: why you delay, why you defer, why you undercharge, why the statement stays unopened. It is the part of wealth that no bank account shows and, in my experience, the part that decides most outcomes.
In twenty years I watched informed, intelligent women hand decisions to a husband, a father or an adviser, keep money in cash for years, and negotiate for everyone except themselves. A product would not have fixed that. A plan alone would not have fixed it either.
What none of them does — and why it matters
Here is the gap I saw again and again: the banker assumes you know what you want, the advisor assumes you will follow the plan, and the coach often does not know enough about money to challenge the plan itself. A woman can end up with three professionals and still no one who sees the whole picture.
That is why I built the WIN Method™ on three pillars that are worked together: Wealth Intelligence (understanding money and markets), Inner Alignment (your relationship with money and worth) and Negotiation & Voice (holding your ground at every table where your wealth is decided). It is an education and coaching method, not investment advice — and it is designed so that you walk into any bank or advisory meeting as the one who leads it.
How to use all three well
Start with yourself, not with a product. Know your numbers, your goals and the beliefs you inherited about money. Then choose an advisor whose payment model you understand, and use a private bank when you need its access and execution. Ask every professional the same three questions: How are you paid? What would you do in my place? What will you not tell me unless I ask?
The woman who asks those questions calmly is rarely sold the wrong thing.
